Adagio for Strings, Op. 11

(for benn)

Yes. We've all heard this piece used in several films and television shows, notably Platoon. But Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is one of my favourite pieces ever. This version was recorded in 1965 under the baton of Thomas Schippers, and with input from Barber himself. It is, in my opinion, the best.

I cannot help but allow myself the luxury of tears when I listen. It is at the intersect of melancholy and hope that I find myself while listening. Fear and hope, strength and ascendancy, that provokes such a rare sentiment in me.

P.S. The Royal Scottish National Orchestra Adagio for Strings conducted by Marin Alsop is also excellent.
